KOCHI: September 15 is the deadline for hotels, restaurants, fast food joints, fish and meat stalls, and vegetable and fruit outlets to set up their own waste processing systems.

The local bodies will not renew the licences of such units, if the owners fail to set up waste processing mechanisms either at source or other places. Moreover, officials should certify that the waste processing systems are set up in accordance with government guidelines.

According to a government directive dated July 22, action will be taken against employees of local bodies who fail to ensure that hotels, restaurants, fast-food outlets, fish and meat stalls, and vegetable and fruit shops set up proper waste processing units.

The Haritha Karma Senas will report on the functioning of waste processing units. It will also report lapses including dumping of waste water in public places or water bodies.

The report will suggest fine for violations, besides recommending the closure of such units.
