Fishermen from both traditional and mechanised sectors, who converged here on Tuesday for a workshop on sustainability issues, agreed to continue their dialogue on measures to self-regulate even as they recognised the need for establishing three-tier committees that will look at fishing practices and regulate them at the ground level.

The day-long workshop, held at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), was organised by Parambaragatha Matsya Thozhilali Samithy, a combine of traditional fishermen. Seven presentations on topics as varied as the state of sardine fisheries to the state of marine enforcement in the State were presented and discussed.

Peter Mathias and Joseph Xavier Kalappurakkal of Kerala Mechanised Boat Owners’ Association and P.B. Dayanandan and Charles George, representing the traditional sector, attended the workshop along with other leaders and stakeholders.

CMFRI director A. Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the workshop. Director of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology C. N. Ravishankar was the chief guest.
