The first government college in Vypeen Block, the Vypeen Government Arts and Science College, Elamkunnappuzha, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan either in the last week of July or in early August.

The new college would fill a long-felt need for an institution for higher education in the islands surrounding Kochi city, said S. Sarma, MLA.

He said there was not even a private or an aided college in the block. People from the islands had been depending on colleges in Kochi or Kodungalloor for their higher education requirements.

A total of ₹2 crore has been allotted from the MLA fund for starting work on the college. The college will initially start functioning from the Elamkunnappuzha Government New Lower Primary School.

Sources said students from the lower primary school would be shifted to the building of the Elamkunnappuzha Higher Secondary School. The State government has issued an order permitting the shifting of the LP school students. It is expected that money for a new building for the LP School will be sanctioned during the course of the year.

Former principal of the Government College, Munnar K. Jayakumar has been appointed special officer in-charge of the project.
