The Central government’s decision to open up the retail sector for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will deny livelihood options for over 4 crore traders, said Opposition leader V.S. Achuthanandan.

Speaking at a public meeting organised in connection with the inauguration of the Cochin Shipyard Workers’ Union office in Kochi on Sunday,

Mr. Achuthanandan said the decision lacked sanctity as the Manmohan Singh government had lost its majority in the Parliament. Many of the constituents of the United Progressive Alliance were also opposed to the decision to permit FDI in retail and pension sectors.

The Ministers of Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam and the Nationalist Congress Party had not even attended the last cabinet meeting, he said.
