Improvement in overall performance during 2000-2010 saw public- sector Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) trim its operating losses to Rs.62 crore in the last financial year against the Rs.178 crore during 2008-09.

The company had declared a profit of Rs.43 crore during 2008-09 thanks to the Rs.221-crore extraordinary income.

A statement issued by the company here on Thursday said that a “significant development of immense positive impact” was that during the last quarter — January-March 2010 — FACT earned a net profit of Rs.93 lakh.

Production of Factamfos, a premium product and the sales-driver for FACT, reached more than 7.53 lakh tonnes during the last financial year as against six lakh tonnes during the previous year.

The production of ammonium sulphate stood at 1.79 lakh tonnes during the last fiscal. The production figure for the same during 2008-09 was 1.28 lakh tonnes. Production of caprolactam, which is a petrochemical product, touched more than 42,000 tonnes last year against 13,548 tonnes during 2008-09.

Uninterrupted operation

All the production units of FACT recorded uninterrupted operation with some of the plants achieving more than 100 per cent capacity utilisation.

Sales performance of the company too was commendable last year. Factamfos sales stood at 7.26 lakh tonnes during the last financial year, up from the previous year's level of 6.05 lakh tonnes. Sale of ammonium sulphate also picked up momentum during the last financial year. The figure for ammonium sulphate sales last financial was 1.44 lakh tonnes compared to 1.17 lakh tonnes during 2008-09.

There was a big leap in the sales of caprolactam, which touched 38,253 tonnes last financial year against previous year's 12,291 tonnes. Caprolactam exports too improved substantially during the last financial year. Total outflow stood at nearly 10,000 tonnes against nearly 4,000 tonnes during 2008-09.

Trading in imported fertilisers also improved last financial year. A total of 82,657 tonnes of urea and 70,032 tonnes of muriate of potash were imported during the last financial year.

Total sales turnover during 2009-10 reached Rs.2,116 crore compared to the Rs.2,169 crore during the previous financial year.
