Ernakulam tops the charts in LIFE Mission programme

District achieves 83% progress as work on 882 houses completed

Ernakulam district has made it to the top in the State government’s LIFE (Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment) Mission programme, achieving 82% progress in activities under the initiative.

A press release from the Public Relations Department said the State average in the implementation of the project was 43%. Work on 882 houses has been completed in the district under the programme. A total of 1,081 houses are to be constructed as part of the programme. Work on the remaining 199 houses will be completed by April 30, said District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla.

A total of 553 houses were constructed by various local bodies under the initiative, while the target is 647 houses. Credit goes to block panchayats for completing work on the maximum number of houses, according to LIFE Mission project director K.G. Thilakan. Block panchayats completed construction of 233 of the targeted 256 houses, while grama panchayats readied 205 of the targeted 235 houses. Municipalities completed 68 of the 89 houses targeted, and the Kochi Corporation completed 47 of the 67 houses planned. Houses are being constructed under the supervision of Fisheries and SC/ST Welfare departments, among others. The programme aims at providing houses to all in the State.

PM Awas Yojana

Meanwhile, the authorities have completed construction of all houses planned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Edappally block. Incidentally, Edappally is the first block in the district to complete construction of the targeted number of houses, said a press release.

The progress was reported at a meeting of the monitoring committee here. Programmes like the National Employment Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana were also reviewed at the meeting which was chaired by K.V. Thomas, MP.

It was also reported that the first phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana had been completed, and that nearly 75% of work in the second phase had been over.
