Ernakulam records 79.39 p.c. polling

Kunnathunadu has one of the highest turnouts of 85.36 p.c.

Voter turnout in Ernakulam in the Assembly election remained at 79.39 per cent, according to tentative figures on the official website of the Chief Electoral Officer on Monday evening.

Though most likely to change, the voter turnout, as it stood, was a good 1.74 per cent higher than the 77.65 per cent recorded in 2011.

Kunnathunadu recorded one of the highest voter turnouts of 85.36 per cent compared to 83.36 per cent five years ago. In Perumbavoor, the turnout rose to 83.80 per cent from 81.13 per cent in the last election.

Angamaly registered a marginal increase in polling percentage, which went up to 82.84 per cent from 81.24 per cent in 2011. Muvattupuzha registered over 4 per cent rise in voter turnout to 79.04 per cent from 75.03 per cent in the last election.

In Kothamangalam, the turnout rose to 77.38 per cent from 74.12 per cent, while in Vypeen, there was a very minimal increase to 79.43 per cent from 79.26 per cent in 2011.

In Kochi, a significant rise of 6 per cent was recorded in voter turnout. The voting percentage went up to 72.09 per cent from 66.91 per cent in 2011. In Aluva, the turnout increased to 82.97 per cent from 80.25 per cent, and Piravom witnessed a voter turnout of 80.40 per cent from 79.08 per cent in 2011.

In Thripunithura, the voter turnout dropped marginally from 76.25 per cent in 2011 to 76.20 per cent. In Kalamassery, the turnout increased from 79.55 per cent to 81.24 per cent. In Ernakulam, the turnout increased to 72 per cent from 71.64 per cent, and in Thrikkakara, it was 74.47 per cent, while the turnout recorded in 2011 was 73.62 per cent. The turnout in Paravur registered a marginal decline with this year’s turnout remaining at 83.43 per cent as against 83.96 recorded last time.

Voting, which started on a slow note, gathered momentum towards the end of the day. According to tentative figures, in the last two hours between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m, voter turnout increased by 21.43 per cent in Vypeen, 17.95 per cent in Kochi, 17.47 per cent in Thrikkakara, 16.24 per cent in Muvattupuzha, 13.48 per cent in Kothamangalam, 12 per cent in Ernakulam, 11.64 per cent in Angamaly, 11.80 per cent in Perumbavoor, 11.19 per cent in Tripunithura, and 7.16 per cent in Kalamassery.

Though voting was supposed to be over by 6 p.m., it had to be extended in several booths.
