Ernakulam General Hospital has been nominated for an award instituted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
It is the only hospital from the State among the three hospitals nominated in the relevant category. District Collector P.I. Sheikh Pareed entrusted former hospital superintendent and district medical officer Junaid Rahman to make a presentation in this regard at the last round inspection to be held at New Delhi towards the end of this month.
Super specialty block
The hospital development committee held recently decided to set up a super specialty block and quarters for doctors utilising the space available at RMO Quarters. Hibi Eden, MLA, has mobilised Rs.1 crore towards this cause through voluntary organisations. Ludy Luiz, MLA, pledged more funds if needed. The design of the block will be readied within five days.
The general hospital has been nominated for the award by virtue of its status as the only government hospital with an accreditation of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers. The nomination is the result of intense work carried out under the guidance of Mr. Rahman. The Collector said that it will be a great achievement if the hospital managed to bag the award.
A new dialysis unit at the centre with 12 state-of-the-art machines will be opened by the Chief Minister on August 12. The meeting approved the proposal to modernise the casualty block using the Asset Maintenance Fund and the RSBY funds. The number of beds in the block will be increased from the existing six to ten.
The proposal of Rotary Club of Kochi West to modernise the cancer ward at the hospital at a cost of Rs.50 lakh has also been approved. The project aims at arranging 28 beds at the chemotherapy unit, which reels under lack of facilities, and fully air conditioning it. Re-arrangement of the cancer ward is also on the anvil.

Beena, hospital superintendent P.G. Ani, and Hospital Development Committee members A. Sreedharan, M.P. Radhakrishnan, and Sojan Antony were present.
