Colleges in Ernakulam district were leading the overall point tally on the second day of the Mahatma Gandhi University Arts Festival held at various venues here on Saturday.

RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Thripunithura, and Maharaja’s College were tied at 12 points each at the top of the point tally when the results were compiled around 7 p.m. Sacred Heart College, Thevara, was at the second position with 10 points, followed by DB College, Keezhoor, Kottayam, at the third place with eight points.

Mono act

Mono act was one of the main attractions on the second day of the festival. The event held at Rajendra Maidan evoked mixed response from the audience. Some performances stood out, but many failed to impress the viewers. From patriotism and nationalism to attacks against women, the participants came up with a variety of themes on stage. The lack of adequate preparation was evident in some performances, while many could not come up with relevant themes. Girls gave a tough run for boys by ensuring adequate participation in the event. They also won applause for portraying various emotions on stage well.

It was a tough time for participants in the Kathakali competition. The event, which was scheduled to begin at 12 noon, began only around 4 p.m. The participants had a gruelling wait with their facial make-up done hours before the start of the competition. The organisers said that the increase in the number of participants was the reason for the delay in the timely completion of most events.

The festival mood was alive at Maharaja’s College, where Ottanthullal, Kathakali, Kerala Nadanam, painting, light music (female), short story writing (English), essay writing (English) and poetry writing (English) competitions were held on Saturday.

In the keenly fought Ottanthullal competition, Remya Krishnan of DB College, Keezhoor, won the first prize, while Arjun Kanth of RLV College, Thripunitura, and Ramdas K.S. of St. Mary’s College, Manarcaud, bagged the second and third prizes respectively. The team representing Sacred Heart College, Thevara, won the first prize in mime competition.

Second and third prizes

Cochin College, Kochi, and Maharaja’s College bagged the second and third prizes respectively. SNM College, Maliankara, won the Thiruvathira competition, while St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam, and RLV College bagged the second and third prizes respectively.

Abin Baby of RLV College won the Bharatanatyam competition in the male category. Ramdas K.S. of St. Mary’s College, Manarcaud, and Xavier Stalin K.B. of St. Albert’s College, Ernakulam, bagged the second and third prizes respectively.

In the Kathakali competition, Chithira G. Nair of NSS Hindu College, Changanacherry became first, while Remya Krishnan of DB College, Keezhoor, won the second position. Suchitra M.G. of Government Law College, Ernakulam, stood third.
