Real empowerment lies in women recognising their own strength, national award winning actor Sharada has said. She was sharing her life experience at a women empowerment meet organised by the Women’s Cell of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (cmfri) here on Monday.

Ms. Sharada recalled that she mostly presented screen characters that brought respect to women.

She said she was most satisfied realising that changes took place in society because of her films and that her biggest life experiences were the characters she presented on screen.

She said she often laughed at her being described in Malayalam media as presenting sad characters.

She recalled that she was just 19 years old when she started her film career with Inapraavukal with lead actors Sathyan and Prem Nazir. The love and cooperation from the film fraternity helped her carry her career forward, she said.

Ms. Sharada, who had been elected to Lok Sabha from Tenali in Andhra Pradesh, said Kerala was different from other States and that the State had made exemplary achievements in many fields.

A. Gopalakrishnan, director of CMFRI, welcomed the gathering and women’s cell chairperson Somi Kuriakose, and P. Jayashankar spoke.
