A timber importer from Edappally and his son were arrested here on Friday on charge of tampering with money placed under prohibitory order by Income Tax officials.
Income Tax officials had sealed a sum of Rs.82 lakh and placed it under prohibitory order at the residence of V.P. Rasheed, a timber importer from Edappally, when they conducted a raid there in October.
The raid was held to investigate a charge that Mr. Rasheed had evaded tax. The department later filed a case with the Thrikkakara police alleging that the money placed under seal had been tampered with and that the accused had committed criminal breach of trust. According to the complaint, Mr. Rasheed allegedly removed Rs.80 lakh from the sealed amount.
He was arrested along with his son Asher Rasheed after their anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the District Additional Sessions Court on Tuesday. He had argued in his bail petition that Income Tax officials had only placed Rs.2 lakh under seal.
The accused were produced before the Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate Court on Friday.
