Plastic waste is strictly forbidden in Malayatoor.

The District Collector has banned the use and dumping of plastic and aluminium food packages in and around the Malayattoor pilgrim area. Any such act would invite a fine of up to ₹10,000, said a press release here. The ban order is part of the efforts by the district administration and the Neeleeswaram panchayat to follow the green protocol during the coming pilgrim season. The pilgrim season lasts between April 1 and April 30.

The dumping of plastic bottles and food containers in the Malayattoor area has also caused the river Periyar to be polluted.
