Drugs concealed in bags seized from flight

August 02, 2017 07:27 pm | Updated 07:27 pm IST - Kochi

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Wednesday foiled an attempt to smuggle 55 kilograms of ephedrine, valued around ₹1 crore in the Indian market, through the Kochi airport.

Acting on a tip-off, DRI sleuths seized the consignment of drugs hidden inside the bags, which had gone through routine security checks, on an aircraft bound for Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

The operation was following a last-minute alert received by the DRI about a lot of 600 bags cleared and loaded onto the aircraft. It turned out that the 60 bags contained the contraband.

According to the preliminary investigation, a Chennai-based export firm had brought the consignment to the airport. The DRI produced the contraband before a court at Angamaly.
