Drive against filariasis to begin today

The Mass Drug Administration to check the spread of filariasis will begin on Thursday.

The three-day programme will be inaugurated in the district at the primary health centre, Kakkanad, by Benny Behanan, MLA. Eldose Kunnappillil, district panchayat president, will preside over the function. R. Sudhakaran, district medical officer, will deliver the keynote speech.

The district Health authorities have targeted to give medicines to 29 lakh people of the 34 lakh population in the district with support from various NGOs.

The corporation area is most affected by filariasis. MDA intends to bring down the prevalence of filariasis from 1.5 per cent to 0.15 per cent. The State is second highest in the prevalence rate after Bihar.
