Discussion on Mullaperiyar dam to be held in Kottayam

Socio-cultural activists from Kerala and Tamil Nadu will come together to participate in a discussion being organised here to arrive at a consensus in resolving the existing impasse between the two States over the issue of the Mullaperiyar Dam.

Tamil writer Charu Nivedita will inaugurate the meeting that will be held at the K.P.S. Menon Hall on July 7. Veteran journalist B.R.P. Bhaskar will preside over the meeting.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, C.P. Roy, former chairman of the Mullaperiyar samara samithy said that the meeting was intended to bring together eminent personalities from both States on a common platform and to work towards a lasting solution. He added that the programme held relevance as it is being organised at a time when the governments of the States remained unwilling to hold discussions in the issue. The proposals that find consensus at the discussion will be presented before both governments. Prof. Roy also said that the next round of discussions will be organised in Tamil Nadu.

The talks at the programme will be moderated by a presidium that will comprise of Mr. Bhaskar, historian M. Gangadharan and researcher T.T. Sreekumar.

The discussion will commence with Prof. Roy and Five District Farmers’ Association president K.M. Abbas presenting the stances of Kerala and Tamil Nadu respectively in the issue.

Other personalities expected to speak on the occasion include C.R. Neelakantan, Rajan Gurukkal, D. Vinayachandran, Kochouseph Chittilappally, Kallen Pokkudan, K.K. Kochu, K.R. Meera, Anand, Unni R., Manushyaputhiran, C.S. Chandrika, Shihabudheen Poythumkadavu, Muse Mary, S. Kannan, Pama, C.G. Vasudevan Nair, Selma, Kalki, Rajanandini, Devika, K.G. Harikrishnan and M.P. Manoj.
