Heart disease is the main cause of deaths in India, said Dr. P. Chandramohan, renowned cardio-thoracic surgeon and former Vice Chancellor of the Kannur University, here on Sunday.

He was speaking after receiving the Heart Care Foundation’s (HCF) lifetime achievement award for the year 2016 from K. Narayana Kurup, chairman, Police Complaints Authority, Kerala. “Heart disease is one of the major lifestyle diseases, and deaths caused by it can be reduced by leading a disciplined life,” said Dr. Chandramohan.

Cause for cancer

He added that smoking is a major cause for both heart diseases and cancer.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kurup said that prevention should be the catchword with regard to heart diseases.
