The eastern sector of the district may face increased risk of landslips and floods if the rains intensify.

The disaster management experts had issued alerts for landslips and flood valid till August 5 considering the intense rain that the district had received.

Though the eastern parts of the district, including Kothamangalam village, received more than 7 cm rain during the past few days, no major causality was reported from there except damage to the agricultural sector, disaster management experts said. However, the weathermen have predicted very heavy rain fall in many parts of the district till August 11. The warnings may be revised considering the rainfall data provided by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the predictions of the Meteorological Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, heavy rainfall exceeding 7 cm will occur at isolated places in Kerala till Wednesday. Though there was a let up in rain situation in the district on Sunday, some parts of Perumbavoor received showers on the day.

The disaster management experts had identified 13 locations in the city and adjoining areas, including Chellanam, Kumbalanghi, Palluruthy, Edakochi, Rameswaram, Thoppumpady, Mattanchery and Fort Kochi, as vulnerable to sea erosion and floods.

The experts would be focusing their attention on areas in the eastern sector in the district where natural hazards were likely to take place. The priority areas include the banks of Muvattupuzha River and upstream areas and many parts of Kothamangalam village. Water level in the Periyar had increased following heavy showers. The storage level of the Edamalayar dam too, had gone up, they said.

A team of National Disaster Response Force has reached the district on Sunday as part of the disaster prevention preparedness measures.

Squads operational As the rains have intensified, the Health Wing of the Kochi Corporation has made two squads operational. The teams would be attending complaints of waterlogging reported by local councillors, said T.K. Ashraf, the chairperson of the Health Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation.
