The decline of the joint family system has impacted the elders and senior citizens most, with the reduction of family care for them, said C.N. Ramachandran Nair, Acting Chief Justice designate of the High Court of Kerala.

Mr. Nair was inaugurating a legal awareness programme and seminar conducted on the occasion of the celebration of Senior Citizens' Day and Gandhi Jayanti here on Sunday. The programme was jointly organised by the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) and the Kerala State Legal Services Authority.

M.C. Valson, professor of the NUALS, presided over the function. K.C. Sreekumar, V.S. Sebastian, V. Narayana Swami, Sr. Jane, Ashitha Asha Pradeep and S. Sudheesh Kumar were among those who attended.

Awareness classes on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, were held. A discussion on Gandhian thoughts was also organised in this connection.
