Hibi Eden, MLA, has urged the government to dismiss from service the police personnel allegedly found guilty of torturing Johnson who died at a city hospital on September 25.
Mr. Eden said the police had picked up Johnson for drunken behaviour on September 18 and had allegedly tortured him in custody. After he was let off, with a petty case slapped against him, he came home and related to his wife the brutal torture that he was subjected to, said Mr. Eden.
Later on, John was admitted to a private hospital on September 21 where he died four days later. Mr. Eden said while the Congress mandalam committee had earlier demanded constitution of a special investigation team to probe the alleged custodial torture, in the wake of the post-mortem report, it wanted the police officers who allegedly assaulted him to be removed from service.
The post-mortem report, he said, clearly mentioned the injuries he sustained before death, with the conclusion that the “injuries could have accelerated the disease process”.
