Two unique programmes will offer students a refreshing experience this summer vacation.

The Centre for Science in Society (C-Sis) at the Thrikkakara campus of the Cochin University of Science and Technology is the place to go for budding science enthusiasts. Mazhavillu , a children’s theatre movement jointly run by Changampuzha Cultural Centre and Lokadharmi, will provide theatre enthusiasts among school students a space to hone their skills.

C-Sis will start its prestigious mid-summer Science Talent and Total Capacity Development Programme on April 3. The first session will conclude on April 30.

“Participants will be exposed to the lives and achievements of renowned scientists and inventors through actual demonstrations and vivid descriptions of stories behind such discoveries. Our aim is to inculcate the basic principles of science among the students in an interesting manner especially through observations and experiments,” says Dr K.G. Nair, Director of C-SiS. The programme for the second batch will begin on May 5.

Students in classes between IV and VI will be admitted in to the junior batch. Those between Classes VII and X will comprise the senior batch.

Dr. Nair said that each student should do two projects in science, which will be presented in an exhibition.

“The children admitted to these programme will have a busy schedule with the science library, various laboratories (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer and ISRO pavilion) where they get opportunities to do various experiments. They could play and learn science in the ‘Science Park’ at C-SiS,” he said.

Mazhavillu’ s theatre camp for children will be held from April 21 to 28. Chandradasan, noted theatre personality and Director of Lokadharmi, said that admission to the camp would be open to all children aged between 8 and 15.

Popular among the children for its sustained efforts to encourage theatre among the children, Mazhavillu has been able to attract many children into the world of theatre for long.
