: A curriculum workshop held at the Ernakulam Maharaja’s College on Thursday was called off following protests by students affiliated to the Student’s Federation of India (SFI) against the institution’s autonomous status.
Students entered the venue of the workshop and shouted slogans against the sanctioning of the autonomous status to Maharaja’s College.
P.K. Abdul Azis, chairman of the governing council of the college, along with other participants left the venue in view of the protests by the students. Police later removed the agitating students. Principal Prof. T.V. Francy said that the curriculum workshop was organised by the internal quality assurance cell aimed at re-structuring the courses being offered by the college. Maharaja’s is the only government college to have received the autonomous status in Ernakulam while the remaining three are in the aided sector.
A section of teachers had earlier protested against the decision to sanction autonomy to Maharaja’s saying it will affect the democratic character of the college.
