Just two years into its launch, The Hindu Student Edition , customised to the needs of the student fraternity with a mix of syllabus-based and activity-based content, seems to have captured the imagination of schools in the city and beyond. A meeting of principals organised as part of The Hindu Newspaper in Education programme here on Wednesday saw the representation of all leading schools. It reflected the overwhelming response for the student edition.
Jayaprabha Pradeep, principal of Gregorian Public School, Maradu, was all praise for the all-colour broadsheet. “We have made it a must-read for students of standards IV, V and VI for its format that presents the content with clarity. The pictures are breathtaking that makes it an automatic pick for students,” she said.
P.R. Asha, principal, Al-Azhar Public School, Thodupuzha, came up with a creative suggestion to introduce a section on rights and laws governing safety of children.
Esther Agnes, principal of Vidyodaya School, Thevakkal, said that the school has dedicated 10-15 minutes on Fridays for quiz competitions based on the student edition.
Maya Menon, principal of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala, said that the content of the student edition is too good to miss. The school has plans to introduce sessions based on the edition next month.
Anjana Unnikrishnan, vice-principal of Choice School, said that the edition has evoked good response among the students with many subscribing it.
Nirmala Venkateshwaran, principal of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Girinagar, said that the student edition has become a part of the lives of students. “We have a mandatory reading session for 10 minutes after the lunch break every day. The session is now entirely consumed by the student edition,” she said.
Sukumari Menon, principal, Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, marvelled at the excellent coverage of the edition that makes it an enjoyable read for students. “We conduct quizzes based on the edition daily and subsequently announce the winners,” she said.
Fr. Benny Maramparambil, principal of Naipunya Public School, Thrikkakara, said that the edition has been runaway hit among students from standard IV to VII. “We see to it that they read all pages and conduct quiz competitions based on that,” he said.
Dance by students of Al-Azhar Public School, Thodupuzha, enlivened the afternoon followed by presentations by Dr. P.C. Alexander, paediatrician with the department of child health and adolescent medicine at the Aster Medicity, and Dr. Vinod Kumar P, consultant orthopaedic surgeon.
The meet was sponsored by Aster Medicity and Nolta Cookware (Kottaram Trading Company). P. Narayanan, Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Kochi, welcomed the gathering and P.C. Muralidharan, regional manager (Circulation) proposed vote of thanks.
