Concerned over the inhuman conditions of migrant labourers living in various camps provided by contractors and the ill-treatment meted out to them, a single judge of the Kerala High Court has referred a case involving the issue to a Division Bench for initiating suo motu public interest litigation on the issue.
The reference was made by Justice K. Vinod Chandran in his judgment delivered in a case related to an unhygienic labour camp functioning at Amabalamedu in Kochi. The Judge had ordered the Vadavukode Punthkurizhu grama panahcyat to close down the camp functioning in an unhygienic condition in a building and to rehabilitate the migrant workers.
The Judge observed that the recent incidents often had brought to public scrutiny the problems faced by migrant labours with an emphasis on the crimes they committed.
While highlighting the criminal acts of such migrant labourers, it was to be noted that the persons bringing them into the State treated them dismally and house them in inhuman conditions.
The Judge added that migrant workers were lured by the prospects of regular employment. Those who employed them got cheap labourers.
Those bringing them into the State treat them dismally and house them in inhuman conditions.
