A local court on Thursday turned down the bail plea of Mini Mathew, the owner of the day-care centre at Palarivattom, who was arrested for allegedly torturing a toddler two days ago.

The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Kunnumpuram, Kakkanad, rejected the application citing the possibility of the accused influencing the witness, and that a police probe into the charges against her was on.

Mini Mathew, 49, who ran ‘Kaliveedu’ playschool on P.J. Antony Road, was arrested on May 23. The incident came to light after the video footage of the woman torturing the toddler, shot using a mobile camera by a woman employee, was aired by some television news channels.

Meanwhile, the employee told the police that the accused used to physically harm other toddlers too. Moreover, Mini used to beat up children and drag them to the washroom. She further said the elder children were spared as she feared they would complain to their parents.
