The special council meeting of the Corporation that met here on Friday approved projects worth Rs. 61 crore under the People's Plan Programme for the financial year 2010-‘11.
Road maintenance
This included projects for Rs. 27.66 crore under general section, those for Rs. 12.59 crore under special component plan, Rs. 9.26 crore under maintenance grant (roads) and Rs. 7.09 crore for works other than road maintenance.
Funds to the tune of Rs. 4.39 crore that was allotted for renovation of roads have also been included in this, Mayor Mercy Williams told the Council.
Post vacant
Participating in the discussions, councillor T.J. Vinod said that funds identified for welfare schemes of SC/ST communities are not being fully utilised. Leader of Opposition A.B. Sabu pointed out that the post of development officer has been lying vacant since the last officer got promoted.
In her reply, Ms. Williams said that the failure to fully utilise funds were partly technical and also due to shortage of beneficiaries.
The State Government has been alerted about this.
Welfare schemes
Some of the welfare schemes have been taken up and successfully implemented under other programmes like Basic Service for Urban Poor (BSUP) and Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), she said.
Out of the 206 projects submitted by the civic body before the Road Development Committee, technical sanctions were issued for 128 projects.
Tenders will be invited for these projects soon, the Mayor said.
