Anticipating a harsh summer and resultant drinking water shortage in the city, the civic administrators are planning to convene shortly meetings of the officials concerned.
A meeting of the officials of the project implementation unit of the Piravom water supply scheme would be convened within a week to review its progress, Mayor Tony Chammany informed the Kochi Corporation council meeting on Friday.
The water supply scheme of the corporation is being implemented by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) using funds released to the local body under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The officials involved in the implementation of the project will present a report on its progress. The project is expected to bring more water to the city, Mr. Chammany has said.
Another meeting of KWA officials, along with the officials of the Kochi Metro and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, will be convened to discuss drought preparedness. The officials of the metro project would be asked to attend the meeting following complaints that the metro works were obstructing water supply and breaking pipes at some points, Mr. Chammany said.
Several councillors, including chairpersons of the Standing Committees, complained of acute water shortage in their respective divisions.
T.J. Vinod, the chairman of the Development Standing Committee, and K.R. Premakumar, a councillor, demanded immediate steps for the maintenance of the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram. In his reply, Mr. Chammany said the local body might not be able to fully utilise the Rs. 1 crore earmarked from the plan fund for the repair of the plant. Steps for strengthening the existing plant would be taken based on a report from a structural engineering expert, Mr. Chammany informed the council,
