The Corporation of Cochin has reiterated its commitment to continuously improve the facilities at the Ernakulam main market. Chairman of the Standing Committee for Development Gracy Joseph said a slew of improvement programmes were being carried out at the market, including paving the alleyways with concrete tiles so that it can be easily cleaned and maintained.

She said that the current Corporation Budget too had new programmes for the market, which would be implemented after the Assembly elections.

The Corporation budget for 2016-17 has laid down a programme of action to improve facilities at several of the market hubs within the city. These programmes include the ones for the Champakkara, Polakandam and Palluruthy Veli.

One of the keys to providing a facelift to the Ernakulam market is cleaning up and maintaining the Market Canal, which once used to be the lifeline of the business hub. However, with boats going out of fashion and road transport taking over, the Market Canal has fallen on bad days with waste being dumped. However, things have improved of late with more regular cleaning.
