Commencing the probe into the suicide of a probationary sub-inspector at the Ernakulam North police station, a police team on Monday collected the statements of former colleagues of the deceased officer with the Kochi city police.

A police team headed by A.R. Prem Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (administration), is looking into the factors that led to the suicide. Gopakumar, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room at a lodge on Sunday.

A suicide note purportedly written by the deceased said that he had suffered extreme mental pressure from two senior officers.

“I cannot work under them any more and I am also unable to work in any other place. Death is the only option I have,” reads the note.

It further says that the inquest proceedings should be carried out only by one of his colleagues and that the two senior officers should not be allowed to see his body.

The body of Gopakumar was taken to his native place for cremation after autopsy at the Kalamassery Government Medical College. The public paid homage to the deceased officer at the Ernakulam North police station before his body was taken for cremation.

According to the police, the deceased rented a room at the lodge on Saturday evening.

The death came to light on Sunday morning when the lodge staff alerted the police after the officer failed to respond to their calls. A team of police personnel reached the spot and found him hanging.

He was earlier with the Excise Department and joined the police force through PSC two years ago. He was attached to the Ernakulam North police station six months ago.
