Cops narrow down probe to 3 suspects

Women’s panel says it has vital info about Dalit student's murder, says it will pass it on to police

After trailing multiple suspects in the murder and rape of a Dalit law student at Perumbavoor, the police have now narrowed down their investigation to three persons.

All the three potential suspects, including two migrant workers, are under surveillance, a top police officer said. He added that scientific analysis of evidence was in progress to find out if they were involved in the ghastly act.

Meanwhile, the State Women’s Commission, which had registered a suo motu case, claimed to have received critical information, good enough to lead to the culprit, while evidence was gathered from the victim’s mother and sister at the Perumbavoor Taluk Hospital.

“While the mother and the sister didn’t name anyone, they shared information, which could prove very helpful to the police in nabbing the culprit. The information will be passed on to the police,” commission Chairperson K.C. Rosakutty told the media outside the hospital.

The commission spent more than two hours with the sister and less time with the mother in view of the latter’s troubled state of mind. Ms. Rosakutty said unlike during the commission’s previous visit, when the sister was rather passive, she was quite cooperative on Saturday. She parted with information more freely and shared doubts about the incident, besides expressing apprehension over the delay in nabbing the culprit, Ms. Rosakutty said. She added that the mother should be spared the mental trauma caused by the never-ending stream of visitors. Commission member Lissy Jose and Director Sam Christy Daniel accompanied the Chairperson.

Things did not look bright for the police in the morning, as it emerged that the results of the fingerprint analysis did not match any of the four suspects under detention.

While the mother and the sister didn’t name anyone, they shared information, which could prove very helpful to the police in nabbing the culprit.
