With the laying of Metro rails slated to start within a fortnight, about 18,000 metre conductor rail, used for power supply (third rail traction) arrived here by ship from Germany on Wednesday.
According to Kochi Metro rail Limited, the third rail system, manufactured by the German company railtek, will be utilised for transferring power to the rolling stockThe Kochi Metro follows ‘Third rail traction system’ (fixing the power lines on the side of the rails) instead of overhead power lines. French company Alstom, which has bagged the contract for metro coaches, will be also in charge of the manufacturing, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the traction electrification and auxiliary substations and other systems.
Earlier on Sunday, about 3,200 tonnes of rails for the project had arrived here from France, which will soon be transported by road and stacked at the yard near the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, by IRCON. – Staff Reporter
