City divisions will get Rs.50,000 each and the support of the health officials to fight the growing mosquito menace in Kochi.
Mayor Tony Chammany announced this decision at the corporation council meeting on Friday in reply to the complaints raised by the councillors.
Several councillors raised the pest menace issue which, according to them, had increased in the past few weeks.
The officials would be asked to draw up action plans for controlling the mosquito menace.
The division-level sanitation sub-committees will also be involved in the process in their respective areas. The funds earmarked for the pest control drive would be released in December, he said.
Stray dog menace too found mention in the council meeting. The councillors asked the local body to come out with plans for checking the population of stray dogs in the city.
Mr. Chammany informed the council that the chairman of the Health Standing Committee had been asked to take immediate steps for implementing an animal birth control programme.
The cooperation of non-governmental organisations would be sought for implementing the programme. The project would be reviewed during the second week of December, Mr. Chammany informed the council.
Health wing squad
Several councillors demanded expanding the activities of the recently launched Flying Squad of the Health Wing.
The service of the squads should also be used to curb dumping of garbage on the flanks of roads and release of septage in drains and open lands, they demanded.
The Mayor directed the officials of the health department to submit a report on the activities of the squad.
The corporation would convene a special meeting of the council shortly to discuss the infrastructure projects, which could not be started or were pending for quite some time.
The local body would convene another meeting on Saturday to discuss the legal options available before it regarding the functioning of an illegal hotel at Vyttila, Mr. Chammany informed the council.
