Industry accredited training service providers will extend training to students at the undergraduate level under the government’s additional skill acquisition programme. The government’s plan is to set up ‘community skill parks’ in all the legislative Assembly constituencies in the State.
A meeting of prospective service providers was held at Thiruvananthapuram recently in which the mode of operation of the programme was explained, according to industry sources. Apart from domain skill training, the programme intends to impart soft skills among the students. The programme aims at transforming the employability scene in the State. Different short-term courses will be conducted under the programme to suit the aptitude of students following various disciplines. The modular structure will be provided by the government while the training, including the material, will be provided by the selected agencies.
The courses on offer include banking services, financial market operations, mobile communication, computer hardware and networking, electronic product testing and printed circuit board manufacturing.
The skill development programme has been developed with a view to enabling the new generation perform tasks as required by the industry. The education system has been lacking in facilities to equip the student with appropriate skills to take up jobs in various sectors.
Industry bodies such as Confederation of Indian Industry have been calling for appropriate measures to improve the education system by incorporating technical knowhow at the undergraduate level so that candidates could be absorbed in suitable trades. The government’s initiativeis expected to herald a stage of improved productivity in tune with the emerging needs of the society.
