As part of the International Coastal Clean up day, Indian Coast Guard ships and establishments of the Kerala region in coordination with educational institutions and civil organisations will undertake beach cleaning at Fort Kochi on September 19.

Coastal clean up is also being undertaken simultaneously at Kovalam beach in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode beach and Katcheri jetty at Kavratti by the local coast guard units, a coast guard press release said. The debris and marine litter collected from the beach will be handed over to the Kochi Corporation for further disposal.

The move is to generate awareness about marine environment so that the beaches are made litter free, the release said.

The coast guard will also undertake a community interaction with local fishermen of Vypin Island on September 19.

A bilingual pamphlet has been prepared for the fishermen.
