The Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE) on Friday decided to appoint 30 more doctors to the Cochin Medical College to fill vacancies.
About 30 doctors were appointed last week.
If all the doctors join, the total faculty number is likely to touch 230.
This is one of the requirements to be fulfilled by the institution for inspection of undergraduate and postgraduate courses by the Medical Council of India.
The medical college is going to offer postgraduate courses for the first time, and is awaiting a no-objection certificate from the Kerala University of Health and Allied Sciences.
The new building of the nursing college that will house facilities for B.Sc Nursing and the School of Nursing will be inaugurated soon.
While the college had set up infrastructure, administrative bottlenecks were seen as a major roadblock for the medical college to evolve over the last 13 years. The head of the college had little power to utilise funds to meet even day-to-day requirements of the institution.
The CAPE meeting on Friday has enhanced the powers of the medical director.
The scope of utilisation of funds for a particular requirement has been increased from Rs.25,000 to Rs.1 lakh, with an overall limit of Rs. 3 lakh for various works. Earlier the overall limit was Rs.50,000.
A meeting to discuss the development of the college will be held at the collectorate here on June 3. Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution K. V. Thomas will chair the meeting.
