The takeover procedures of the Cooperative Medical College (CMC) in Kalamassery are likely to take about a month and a half if the government gets all the reports in time.
A team from the Kottayam Medical College is expected to arrive at CMC by the end of the December to inspect all the posts and the appointment details of the permanent employees and also take stock of the available facilities at the medical college.
V. Geetha, Director of Medical Education, told The Hindu that the inspection would try to find gaps, if any, that needed to be filled as per the Medical Council of India norms; whether the departments had sufficient staff and equipment and whether faculty posted met the MCI norms.
The three-day inspection that is likely to begin on December 30 would have teaching faculty, administrative and finance personnel as members.
According to the reports available, about 50 per cent of the non-teaching staff at CMC is either on contract or daily wages. Among the teaching faculty, there are more regular employees than contract employees. There are retired hands as college faculty.
The government order that came out on Tuesday specified that the government was taking over the college with all its assets and liabilities and would be brought under the Directorate of Medical Education. The order also stated that a high-level team would examine the salary and services of the regular employees at the college.
The government has also ordered yet another panel in the Finance Department to find whether the medical college under the Co-operative Department need be given any compensation. However, there is no clarity on what procedure would be adopted for people employed on contract.
