V. R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court judge, spearheading the movement for government takeover of the Cochin Medical College (CMC), has called for immediate government intervention in admissions to the college.
15 NRI seats
CMC has begun admissions to 15 NRI seats out of a total 100 seats. Since the government is yet to take over the college, admissions to the seats will be made through the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE) and according to the process followed by self-financing colleges.
In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Iyer said colleges conducting private entrance examination invite corruption.
A common entrance examination was necessary to maintain transparency of the admission procedure, the statement said.
Decision by June 16
In a recent meeting organised by the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala here, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had said the government would take a decision on the college by June 16. The government had asked the District Collector to submit a report on the assets and liabilities of the medical college.
