Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued closure notice to the Eloor-based public sector Hindustan Insecticides Limited for its failure to scientifically handle the sludge generated from its Endosulfan making plant.

KPSCB Chairman K. Sajeevan told The Hindu that the HIL should stop operations immediately. The move comes in the wake of the finding that the company management failed to initiate adequate steps to dispose of sludge despite repeated directives issued by the regional office of the KSPCB in Ernakulam.

In its notice, the board has asked HIL management to file an action taken report within a week. The board also had found that the management had failed to move the sludge to the Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF)

The action had been taken under the provisions of Environment Protection Act, Water Act, and Air Act.
