Close to one lakh seek enrolment in voters’ list

April 20, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

The number of applicants for inclusion in the voters’ list was inching towards the one lakh mark on Tuesday afternoon, with just hours left for the expiry of application time.

The seven taluks in the district received a combined 92,601 applications till 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The numbers are likely to go up. The applicants had almost three months since the continuous revision of the voters’ list started on January 15.

Not all applicants automatically make their way to the voters’ list since taluk authorities would reject incomplete applications during the processing. While applications will be accepted till April 29, those who apply after the Tuesday-midnight deadline will not be able to vote in this Assembly election.

Among the 14 Assembly constituencies in the district, Aluva, which received 11,040 applications, was way ahead in numerical terms while Kunnathunadu with 4,077 applicants was at the bottom.

Kalamassery constituency received 8,260 applications till 3.30 p.m. followed by Thripunithura with 8,076 applications. Thrikkakara constituency received 7,862 applications, Ernakulam 6,634, Muvattupuzha 6,483, Paravur 6,380, Kothamangalam 6,146, Kochi 5,897, Perumbavoor 5,530, Piravom 5,451, and Vypeen received 8,824 applications.

Among the seven taluks, Kanayannur had the most number of applicants – 22,572. But it was unsurprising since it is the only taluk with three Assembly constituencies – Thripunithura, Ernakulam and Thrikkakara – within its limits. Kothamangalam taluk with a sole constituency by the same name had the least number of applicants. Aluva taluk comprising Angamaly and Aluva constituencies registered the second highest number of applicants – 16,981. Paravur taluk comprising Kalamassery and Paravur constituencies had 14,640 applicants followed by Muvattupuzha taluk accounting for Piravom and Muvattupuzha constituencies with 11,934 applicants.
