As discussions on climate change take centrestage in various fora, an international event to be observed by switching off lights for an hour, is set to hog limelight next week.
Earth Hour, as it is called, is attracting more participants every year. Switching off lights at 8.30 p.m. on March 27 this year will involve much more participation from the people.
While 2.2 million people participated in the 2007 debut event aimed at conserving power and saving the planet from the disastrous effect of carbon emissions, the number of people who participated in the programme the next year zoomed to 50 million, spread across 35 countries.
The third event in the series, held last year, saw the participation of people from 4,000 cities, including Kochi. The event will be observed this year too in Kochi along with other major cities of the world. City-based organisations such as Environment Justice Initiative has already announced its participation.
