The Cochin International Airport, which made history by becoming the first airport in the world to rely solely on solar power, will continue to be so even after the commissioning of the new international terminal on Saturday.

The augmentation of solar power generation capability was among the three mega projects inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here.

The solar power generation capacity is being raised from the present 15.5 MW. The capacity is being raised by another 6 MW in the first phase. Around ₹30 crore is being invested on the solar power project.

CIAL is also erecting solar panels over 2.25 lakh sq.ft. on car ports that will have a capacity to park 1,400 cars.

There will be 8,500 solar panels, which will produce 2.7 MW of power. Around 11,000 units of power will be available when the car port work is complete. There will also be facilities for charging electric cars.
