All Class I students of government schools across the district had an added incentive to celebrate World Environment Day on Monday.
Awaiting them at schools were colourful book wrappers, thanks to the District Suchitwa Mission (DSW) initiative to drive home the significance of the day.
Around 30,000 wrappers designed with slogans on the need for protecting the environment were delivered at 371 government schools in the district as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission’s information education and communication activities.
DSW implemented the project in association with the Business Postal Centre (BPC) of the Postal Department at Thevara, which transported the wrappers from the collectorate to schools.
Four varieties of wrappers with messages on environment conservation were distributed at schools with the objective of inculcating the habits of cleanliness, sanitation, and plastic management among students. It is for the second time DSW is executing such a project by joining hands with BPC.
“Wrappers were made available based on the number of students enrolled in Standard I last year. We will make more wrappers available if the schools demand,” DSW sources said. The project was implemented at a cost of around ₹1.50 lakh.
DSW launched yet another novel project titled ‘Ente Haritha Bhavanam’ (My green house) in association with Bhoomitra Sena Club, which spearheads the eco-friendly activities of St. Teresa’s College, to mark the occasion. The idea is to enlist students on a massive scale to popularise and encourage the adoption of green protocol in everyday life.
DSW has also drawn up 10 components on satisfying which members of the Club can declare their houses green and will be duly certified by DSW.
Ente Haritha Bhavanam project is the brainchild of District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla, who developed the concept on the basis of the district administration’s recent association with Bhoomitra Sena Club.
