Children brought to orphanage sent back

August 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 12:23 pm IST - KOCHI:

The district child protection unit sent back 12 children brought to an orphanage in the district from various north Indian States.

Among the boys aged between seven and 15 years brought to an orphanage at Nettoor, three each were from Delhi and Haryana and six from Rajasthan. Following complaints about their alleged trafficking here, the children were taken to the Child Welfare Committee.

The children are being accompanied by two social workers from the Childline and district child protection unit and four police officers from the special juvenile police. The move to deport them comes in the wake of increased incidents of alleged trafficking to Kerala from neighbouring States.

This was the second repatriation programme since the child protection unit started functioning in the district. Two-tier air-conditioned coaches have been arranged for their journey. Children will be handed over to the district child protection units and child welfare committees concerned.
