On day 1, the new city police commissioner’s message was in tune with the public mood.

K.G. James, the new Commissioner, said police would act sternly against those found involved in crime against women.

Mr. James was the Superintendent of Police, Alappuzha, before he was promoted as Deputy Inspector General of Police and posted as Kochi Commissioner. He succeeds M.R. Ajith Kumar, who has been promoted as Inspector General of Police (crimes).

Mr. James was interacting with the media after assuming office here on Wednesday. After that, he went to report to K. Padmakumar, Inspector General of Police, Kochi Range. Thomson Jose, who has been posted as Superintendent of Police, Alappuzha, was also present.

A top-level meeting of the State police at Thiruvananthapuram following the Delhi gang-rape decided to step up the vigil. As part of this, woman shadow policing would be strengthened. Action would be intensified against goondas too, Mr. James said.

Mr. James joined the police as Circle Inspector, Vadakara in 1982 and was conferred IPS in 2004. He had been posted as district police chief at Malappuram and Pathanamthitta besides Alappuzha and also served as Superintendent of Police, Intelligence, Cochin International Airport.
