The Legal Metrology Department has booked the contractor in charge of food and beverage supply at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium during the ISL match on charges of selling products at exorbitant rates.
According to officials, the case was registered for the sale of juice and mineral water for a price three times the actual price. The case followed a complaint on overpricing of odd products at the stadium during the inaugural ISL match on November 17.
Section 36(1) of the Legal Metrology Act states that whoever manufactures, packs, imports, sells, distributes, delivers or otherwise transfers, offers, exposes or possesses for sale, or causes to be sold, distributed, delivered or otherwise transferred, offered, exposed for sale any pre-packaged commodity which does not conform to the declarations on the package as provided in the Act, shall be punished with fine which may extend to ₹25,000.
“They [suppliers] were found selling fruit juice cans valued at ₹10, at ₹30, while mineral water bottles were sold at ₹40 as against the maximum retail price of ₹15,” officials said. The department had booked similar cases during the last ISL season as well.
