The dawn to dusk State-wide motor strike called jointly by trade unions on Wednesday passed off in the district without affecting public life.
While the private buses totalling around 1,400 in the district stayed off the road, KSRTC rolled out more than 80 additional services to major centres in the city and suburbs.
Additional services were operated to Kakkanad, Fort Kochi, Thevara, Aroor, Cheranalloor, Willingdon Island, and Pookkattuppady besides operating additional Vytilla-Vytilla circular services. KSRTC officials said occupancy on the services were on the lower side.
Boat services by the water transport department were also near normal. Though services to Mulavukad, Varappuzha, Fort Kochi and other places were operated as usual, the occupancy was relatively low, forcing authorities to cancel three trips. However, the cancellation of the Moolamppilly-Chittoor ferry service affected people in these areas.
The strike took its toll on cargo movement from the Cochin Port Trust and Vallarpadam Container Terminal with a section of container trailer workers staying off from work.
The District Collectorate and government offices at the civil station went was closer to normal. More than 80 per cent of employees turned up for duty at the civil station offices while the collectorate recorded absence of just 45 out of its 168 employees.
Infopark Campus was unaffected as employees turned up in their own vehicles while majority of cabs engaged by companies also operated as usual.
Passengers arriving at the Cochin International Airport Limited at Nedumbassery were not put to any hardship as the pre-paid taxis turned up in full strength. KSRTC also operated its services to the airport.
