Car hits pedestrians, one killed

One person of a family was killed and three injured when a car knocked them down on Chittoor Road here.

Vijayalakshmi, 56, was walking along with her three daughters along Chittoor Road when a car hit them around 3.30 p.m. on Monday.

Sreelatha, 25, the youngest of the daughters, died of injuries after the family was admitted to Medical Trust Hospital. Vijayalakshmi and Sreedevi, 29, were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Their conditions were reported to be stable. Sreevidya, 32, was admitted with injuries to her arm.

Police said the family staying at Ethimkhana quarters, Cheruthuruthy, Vadakkanchery, was going towards Ernakulam South Railway Station when the car knocked them down from behind.

There were initial reports that the driver of the car, Noushad of Chowara, Aluva, fled the scene immediately and locals took the victims to the hospital.

Later in the evening, police said Noushad was admitted to the Medical Trust Hospital after he complained of chest pain. However, hospital sources said the patient was admitted after he met with an accident with a motorcycle and was put under observation. City Traffic (West) has taken the car into custody.
