Cancer consultants to be deputed from RCC

Four oncology consultants and six junior doctors from other medical colleges and the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, will be deputed to the Cancer Hospital and Research Institute here.

This was decided at a meeting held at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, on Friday by Special Officer for the cancer centre, Asha Thomas, who visited the proposed venue of the cancer centre for the first time after taking charge recently.

Technical expert for the cancer centre Dr. V. P. Gangadharan, Principal of the Medical College Dr. Ashwini Kumar and Kalamassery Municipal chairman Jamal Manakadan were also among those who visited the venue.

Since the appointments to the cancer centre will be taken up only after the registration of the charitable society on the lines of the Regional Cancer Centre, it was decided to have a medical team deputed to take charge of the OP that is likely to begin by second week of November.

The Special Officer’s team also visited the incomplete pay-ward block of the medical college building that was identified by the expert team earlier to house the out-patient facilities for the cancer centre.

The ground floor will have OPs for two departments — medical and surgical, while the first floor will have a small ward of about 50 beds to take care of the in-patients.

Later, Principal of the Medical College Dr. Ashwini Kumar had a meeting with the PWD engineer, who it was learnt would prepare an estimate for the work.

Political nominees

In the meanwhile, the Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer Movement that had been campaigning for the cancer centre here in a statement had asked the Chief Minister to refrain from appointing political nominees to the governing council of the cancer centre.

It said the cancer centre should have the Chief Minister and Health Minister at the helm like the RCC governing body with top officials in Health departments in the State and Union governments and specialised institutions.
