KOCHI: The Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) will use the facilities at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam. An agreement in this regard was signed on Friday in the presence of District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla, who is also CCRC Special Officer.

Till operation theatres at the cancer centre are ready, CCRC will use the facilities at the medical college. Towards this, CCRC will provide equipment worth ₹50 lakh to the medical college.

Meanwhile, two oncology surgeries have already been conducted at the medical college. Mr. Safirulla said more staffers would be employed at CCRC in view of the rising number of patients. It was decided to appoint a part-time anesthetist at the centre.

A detailed review was also held on the second phase of the CCRC project. The final report on the project will be ready by July 15, and tenders will be called for construction and purchase of equipment by the end of August.

Mr. Safirulla visited the District Hospital at Aluva to get a first-hand feel of how seasonal infections are being handled at the hospital. Mr. Safirulla asked the National Health Mission officials to appoint pharmacists on a two-month contract to deal with the extra rush at the hospital.

The Collector later met hospital superintendent Dr. Anil Kumar. Officials apprised the Collector of the various requirements at the operation theatre complex that is under construction.
