Call for more discussions on climate change

April 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - KOCHI:

Environmental issues should be brought to the mainstream, taking into consideration the extreme climate the State is facing, according to the Swadeshi Science Movement.

Besides the rise in atmospheric temperature, sunstrokes and heat waves have become common in the State, indicating the drastic changes in climate. The changes in climate should serve as warning signals.

Even when the State is experiencing unprecedented heat and climate change, such issues are not being discussed in election campaigns, says a joint statement issued by A.R.R. Menon, vice president of the Swadeshi Science Movement, and P.A. Vivekananda Pai, secretary of Vigyan Bharathi.

Kerala has failed to discuss the issue of saline incursion and the drying up of rivers. Besides the issues concerning climate, discussions on sustainable development models should also be evolved.

The political debates should not be restricted to corruption and other controversies, and should cover the issue of sustainable development too, says the joint statement.
