In a first of its kind, a cadaver hands transplant took place in a private hospital here on Tuesday. Oliparambil Binoy, a 26-year old glass designer from Varapuzha, who was declared brain dead on Monday, was the donor and 30-year old Manu from Thodupuzha, who had lost both hands in a train accident a few years ago was the recipient.

Binoy, son of Utthaman was on treatment with serious head injuries in the hospital after he was admitted with serious head injuries. He was riding pillion on a motorcycle when the accident took place at Koonammavu.

When he was declared brain dead at the hospital, his relatives, who were counselled for organ donation also agreed to donate the forearms of the young man as it would help another young man to overcome his disability.

The surgery involved microsurgery to connect all the arteries, veins, muscles and tendons and other tissue. Once the organ donation was agreed upon, Manu was informed and reached the hospital on Monday night. When the blood sampling matched, the hospital decided to go ahead with the transplant that took place early morning on Tuesday.
